After Dark by TayceOne More Dance
"Sometimes love doesn't need another beginning... it only needs another chance to dance."
Marcus had noticed it weeks ago.
The way Maya would smile at him from across the room... but only for a second before answering another email.
The way she'd brush against him in the kitchen without realizing she had.
The way life had become a series of calendars, grocery lists, and alarm clocks.
Somewhere between building a life together...
...they had forgotten how to pause inside it.
So when Maya texted him that Friday afternoon—
"Be home by seven. Wear the black shirt I love."
—he smiled all the way through his last meeting.
No questions.
No hints.
Just excitement.
The front door opened just after sunset.
Soft jazz drifted through the house.
The scent of vanilla and sandalwood floated through the air, wrapping around him before he could even set his keys down.
The lights were lower than usual.
Candles flickered along the mantle.
Fresh flowers rested in a crystal vase on the dining table.
Then he saw her.
Maya stood near the window, wearing a flowing emerald dress that moved gently with the evening breeze. Her curls framed her face, and she wore the kind of smile that made time slow down.
"You remembered the shirt," she said.
"I remember everything you tell me."
She laughed.
"No, you don't."
"I remember the important things."
She walked toward him, slowly, closing the distance between them until she reached up to straighten his collar.
"I missed this," she whispered.
"What?"
"You looking at me like that."
Marcus smiled.
"I've never stopped."
Dinner was simple.
Neither of them spent much time eating.
Instead they talked.
Not about bills.
Not about work.
Not about tomorrow.
They talked about their first apartment.
Their first vacation.
The time they got caught dancing in the kitchen because they forgot to close the curtains.
"The neighbors definitely saw us," Maya laughed.
"They should've been taking notes."
She reached across the table and squeezed his hand.
"You still make me laugh."
"You still make me nervous."
"Nervous?"
Marcus nodded.
"You'd think after all these years I'd stop getting butterflies."
She looked at him for a long moment.
"Good."
After dinner, Maya disappeared down the hallway.
When she returned, she carried a small velvet gift bag tied with a satin ribbon.
"For me?"
"For us."
Marcus untied the ribbon carefully.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Tonight is about slowing down.No phones. No distractions.Just us.And one new adventure.
Beneath the note rested a beautifully wrapped box.
Its elegant design was simple, sophisticated, and inviting.
Maya smiled.
"I stopped by Tayce this week."
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?"
"I wanted something that reminded me that relationships deserve surprises too."
She laughed softly.
"Not because anything was missing."
She stepped closer.
"But because I never want us to stop exploring."
He looked from the box back to her.
"I think my favorite gift is the thought behind it."
She slipped the box onto the coffee table.
"It can wait."
He looked surprised.
"I thought this was the surprise."
She shook her head.
"No."
She extended her hand.
"This is."
"Dance with me."
"There isn't much room."
"There never has to be."
He placed one hand gently at her back while the other found hers.
The music wrapped around them.
Neither one counted the steps.
Neither one cared.
They swayed slowly across the hardwood floor, laughing when Marcus accidentally bumped into the sofa.
"I blame the furniture."
"I blame your dancing."
"My dancing?"
She nodded.
"You've distracted me."
"Oh..."
He smiled.
"So that's my fault?"
"Completely."
Rain began tapping softly against the windows.
Outside, the city hurried on.
Inside...
Nothing else existed.
She rested her head against his shoulder.
"I've missed this version of us."
"What version?"
"The one that remembers we're more than schedules."
Marcus kissed her forehead.
"We're still here."
"We always were."
Hours later, the candles had nearly burned down.
The music had long since become background to quiet conversation and shared laughter.
The little velvet box still rested unopened on the coffee table.
Maya glanced toward it and smiled.
"It'll still be there tomorrow."
Marcus nodded.
"The best part of tonight wasn't what was in the box."
"What was it?"
"You."
He reached for her hand once more.
"And one more dance."
